Although German drinking water is one of the most strictly regulated foodstuffs, there are certain risks associated with consuming tap water. The Drinking Water Ordinance lists around 50 limits for contaminants that are continuously monitored. This might give the impression that tap water is free of pollutants and harmless.
However, the reality is different. In addition to the pollutants listed in the regulation, there are a number of other ingredients in water that are of concern. Pharmaceutical residues, hormones, pesticides and microplastics, for example, are not included in the regulation. To get around these pollutants, there are water filtration systems that filter tap water and make it more harmless.
